Frequently Asked Questions
How often do volunteers serve?
Most people do 1–2 shifts per month; some help more during busy seasons.
Is there training?
Yes. A short orientation plus role-specific shadowing. We’ll set you up for success.
Age requirements?
Pantry volunteers must be 18+ with the exception of special events or food drives that explicitly welcome young adults to participate with parental consent.
I can’t lift 50 lbs—can I still help?
Absolutely. Choose a role that doesn’t require heavy lifting (e.g., Shopper).
Describe the Shopper role
Shoppers work directly with clients during pantry hours, accompanying them as they select food items. This role combines hospitality and guidance — helping clients navigate choices, explaining limits or categories, and ensuring everyone has a positive, respectful shopping experience.
What does the Stocking Team do?
Members of the Stocking Team help keep the pantry organized and ready to serve clients. They sort, check expiration dates, and shelve donated or purchased food when the pantry is closed to the public. Their work ensures that the food supply is safe, easy to find, and presented neatly for clients during open hours. Stocking Team members must be able to lift 50 pounds.
I'm interested in being a driver, what would my responsibilities be?
Food Pickup Volunteers are responsible for collecting donations from local grocery stores and/or picking up purchased food from the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) satellite dock in Rockland. They ensure that all food is safely transported to the pantry in a timely manner. This role requires reliable transportation, the ability to lift boxes of food, and a commitment to punctuality, since timely pickups help keep the pantry well-stocked and operations running smoothly. Volunteers in this role play a vital part in keeping the shelves filled and supporting the pantry’s mission to reduce food insecurity.
What does a delivery manager do?
Delivery Management
Once the orders are picked up and delivered, the contents of the order must be unloaded from the truck and stocked appropriately in the Pantry. This role requires some flexibility as we don’t always know exactly what time deliveries will be made. Volunteers in this role must be able to lift 50 pounds.
